If you crave cheese, there’s no better place to be than in Wisconsin, especially when you go off the main highways and head to the artisanal specialty cheesemakers that dot the Dairy State countryside.

As part of the Wisconsin Cheese Originals Festival, cheese lovers had a chance to tour some of the best cheese plants and farms in southern Wisconsin, including Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese in Waterloo.

Visitors marveled at cheesemaker George Crave working his magic on milk, sampling the freshest cheese you can get right out of the vat, then checking out the head-end of the operation, a herd of Holsteins that would make any of those California cows blush.

The festival at Monona Terrace last weekend brought hundreds of cheese lovers together with the artisan cheesemakers, a wonderful way for cheese-aholics to sample some of the best in the world.

That’s one of the nice things about living in Wisconsin, eh? It might get cold in winter, but with a good chunk of cheddar, a micro-brew and a fire in the fireplace, all is well.
